The changing face of Silence

Categories Ideas and Opinions

We were all brought up on a healthy dose of Silence is Golden. Golden suggests a nobility of thought and action. A bigger person, a wiser person will uphold Silence while all around is noise and discord. Silent nights are holy nights, whose calm and bright heralded the birth of the Holy Infant. This Child, born in the calm, of Immaculate Conception on a bright Silent night was obviously special. Golden. But Silence has been changing…Even before the Lambs were Silenced and Patti Page sang “Hush… Hush Sweet Charlotte” … Silence has come to become the ‘lack of’… a gaping void…

A Void through which we were constantly warned, in Doctor Who that “Silence will fall”, followed by the arrival of the uber-villains; Silence (a splitting image of Edvard Munch’s eerily Silent ‘The Scream’)

In space, no one can hear you scream… Ahoy Silence. While Silence has been mutating even faster than the popularity of its incarnation, The Silencer… Being Silent or To Be Silent is definitely past its golden days.

Our increasingly vocal world, with multiplying mediums for self-expression and activism… To be Silent is either callous or cowardice. In the face of injustice, ignorance or even plain obnoxiousness.. knowing what we know.. having the tools that we have, To be Silent is simply not an option.  Like the bygone days of silent little Girls, seen not heard, gone are the days to be nobly Silent in Sufferance.

Silence has re-branded…
Silence bodes Evil, Oppression and at the very least Cowardice. This is not to say that the Golden glow that Silence promised has disappeared, we have merely severed cause/action from effect/ goal. Peace, Zen, Nirvana, all remain noble, gold worthy goals to strive for.
But…
